How to Prepare for Your First Driving Lesson

Feeling a little nervous before your first driving lesson is completely normal. Knowing what to expect makes a big difference. Here is how to prepare, what usually happens on the day, and how to make the most of your first hour behind the wheel.

Before the lesson

• Get your learner licence. You will need a current learner licence for your state or territory, and you must carry it on every lesson.
• Bring your log book. If your state uses a log book or log book app, your instructor can record the lesson.
• Wear comfortable, flat shoes. Thin-soled, enclosed shoes help you feel the pedals. Avoid thongs, heels and heavy boots.
• Bring your glasses or contact lenses if your licence requires them.
• Get a good night's sleep and have something to eat beforehand.

What happens on your first lesson

Every instructor plans lessons a little differently, but a first lesson usually covers:

1. A quick chat. Your instructor will ask about any previous driving and how you feel about learning.
2. Getting set up. Adjusting the seat, steering wheel, mirrors and seatbelt so you are comfortable and can see clearly.
3. The controls. Accelerator, brake, indicators, wipers, lights and, in a manual car, the clutch and gears.
4. Moving off and stopping. Usually on a quiet street, practising smooth starts, gentle braking and steering.
5. Feedback. A short debrief on what went well and what to practise next.

Tips for a confident first lesson

• Tell your instructor if you feel nervous. They teach first-time drivers every week and will go at your pace.
• Ask questions whenever something is unclear.
• Focus on being smooth rather than fast.
• Do not worry about mistakes. They are part of learning, and your instructor has dual controls.

After the lesson

Practise what you covered with a supervising driver, ideally within a few days. Regular lessons, every week or two, help skills stick and build confidence steadily. Your instructor can suggest what to focus on in your supervised practice.
