Check they are licensed and accredited

Every state and territory requires driving instructors who teach for payment to hold a driving instructor licence or accreditation. This means they have completed instructor training, passed checks and agreed to a code of conduct. It is the most important box to tick. Instructors who work with learners should also hold a current Working With Children Check.

Look at their experience and teaching style

Some instructors specialise in nervous beginners, some in test preparation, and others in overseas licence holders or experienced drivers who need a refresher. Read instructor profiles for clues, such as the languages they speak, how long they have been teaching and the types of learners they enjoy working with. A calm, patient manner matters more than you might think.

Consider the car

Decide whether you want to learn in an automatic or a manual car. Most instructors teach in a modern, dual-control car with good safety ratings. If you plan to use the instructor's car for your test, check that it is available for test bookings.
