Most driving test fails come from a handful of common mistakes. The good news is that all of them can be fixed with the right practice. Here are five to watch for, whichever state or territory you are testing in.
1. Not enough observation
Examiners watch for regular mirror checks and head checks before changing lanes, merging, moving off from the kerb and turning. Missing a head check is one of the most common reasons for losing marks or failing.
How to avoid it: make observation a habit in every lesson. Check mirrors before you brake, turn or change lanes, and turn your head to check blind spots.
2. Speed management
Driving over the limit, even slightly, can fail you. Driving too slowly for the conditions or hesitating unnecessarily also costs marks.
How to avoid it: know the limit at all times, watch for school zones and changing limits, and adjust smoothly to the conditions.
3. Poor gap selection
Pulling out in front of traffic, or waiting too long for a gap, both show poor judgement.
How to avoid it: practise judging safe gaps at intersections and roundabouts with your instructor until it becomes natural.
4. Signalling errors
Forgetting to signal, signalling too late, or leaving the indicator on are easy to make under pressure.
How to avoid it: signal early enough to warn others, for long enough, and cancel the indicator after each turn.
5. Manoeuvre mistakes
Driving tests include manoeuvres such as reverse parking, three-point turns and kerbside stops. Mounting the kerb, poor observation during the manoeuvre or taking too many attempts can cost you.

Test-day tips
- Book a warm-up lesson before your test.
- Bring everything you need, such as your learner licence and log book.
- If you make a mistake, stay calm and focus on the rest of the drive.
